South America

South America

Nestled between the Caribbean, the South Pacific, and the South Atlantic Oceans, South America is

The wilder of the Americas and a continent of superlatives,  The world's biggest rainforest and the largest river (Amazon), the highest mountain range outside Asia (the Andes), remote islands (Galapagos Islands, Easter Island and Fernando de Noronha), heavenly beaches (such as in Brazil's North-eastern region), wide deserts (Atacama), icy landscapes (Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego), the world's tallest waterfall (the 979m Angel Falls, in Venezuela) and one of the largest (Iguaçu Falls, Argentina and Brazil), as well as several other breathtaking natural attractions.

  • Panama Viejo is the most ancient settlement of the South America along the Pacific coastline;
  • Caraz in Peru is the heart of Tunshucayco ruins of Chavin civilization believed to be one of the oldest in Peru. The town is located between two peaks and is a great activity destination, for hiking, biking, etc. available here;
  • Macha Picchu (literally it's an old mountain) is a lost city boasting fascinating pieces of architecture in South America, it's a true pearl of Peru;
  • travel South America to come to Buenos Aires (in the English language it can be translated as fair winds), a great city, here you will see Buenos Aires Cabildo, that's the home to a museum now; a high symbol of the city, the Obelisk, marking Ra that's the sun god, the capital city stores a lot of sightseeing’s and attractions of South America;
  • the Iguazu Falls are supposed to be a nature jewel of the continent, in the park rare species of flora and fauna can be seen;
  • travel South America to get to an African-like city of Brazil, Salvador de Bahia, known as Black Rome, here you will find an everyday church, sorry, a church for each day per year, because there are 365 of them, amazing old houses and narrow pebbled streets; the air of the town is remarkable.

Each city in South America has its own charm and ambiance.

1.       Buenos Aires, Argentina

Big, sprawling Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is cosmopolitan and yet retains a neighborhood feel in the barrios. Sightseeing, nightlife, including the sensual tango, is a must in this sophisticated city. Buenos Aires sprawls along the banks of the muddy La Plata River, stretches inland in new developments, and is often gray and gloomy. It is a huge city composed of neighborhoods, or barrios. The older ones surrounding the city center are the most famous ones: the barrios which attract tourism. Apart from the colorful tin buildings of the La Boca barrio and the famed pink tones of the Casa Rosado the presidential palace, the city is mostly monochromatic. Buenos Aires is a city with deep anchors to the past and the ethnic and cultural heritages of its residents, but it is also the center of business, government and progressive development.

The people of Buenos Aires who refer to themselves as porteños, or port people, relish their ties to Europe, flaunt their creative energy, delight in culture, fashion and food and share a traditional melancholy for things past.

Buenos Aires was founded in 1536 when Pedro de Mendoza established a settlement on the bluffs above the river but native resistance forced the Spaniards out for nearly fifty years. They came back and tried again. It was slow going particularly under the restrictions of the Spanish crown regarding trade but the growing number of criollo residents persisted. They established trade with other South American and European countries creating traditions still in force today. Argentina proclaimed its Independence from Spain in 1816 and encouraged immigration from Europe.

2.       Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Truly a cidade maravilhosa, Rio is spectacularly located, and to live up to the scenery, carioca’s and visitors enjoy a vivid lifestyle nestled between fabulous beaches and rain forested hills.

3.       Santiago, Chile

Chile's capital city is cosmopolitan, the financial, cultural, and political center of the country. It's graced with tree-lined streets, parks, distinctive neighborhoods, ample assortment of restaurants and hotels. In addition to its own attractions, Santiago is near ski resorts, beach resorts and the ideal base for excursions into the Central Valley and either extreme of Chile.

4.       Sao Paulo, Brazil

The city is South America's largest, Brazil's center of trade and industry. Paulistanos work hard and play hard. Here are some of the things you'll enjoy when you visit São Paulo.

5.       Bogota, Colombia

Nestled high in the Andes at 2620 m. (8646 ft), Santafé de Bogotá is a city of contrasts. It's a city of highrise buildings standing next to colonial churches; a city of universities and theaters. It is a mixture of influences, Spanish and English and Indian.

6.       Lima, Peru

Lima is called the City of Kings for the day it was founded. A vastly important colonial city, Lima now suffers many of the ills of modern cities, but visitors who rush through it on the way to Peru's other attractions are missing a wealth of history and culture.

7.       Caracas, Venezuela

Venezuela's capital and largest city is the center of commerce, culture, economics and the base for touring the country's attractions, including Angel Falls and the llanos.

8.       Cartagena, Colombia

The old walled city and fortress repelled invaders and pirates in its early days. Now it welcomes visitors to its colonial charm, energetic nightlife and nearby attractions.

9.       Quito, Ecuador

Ecuador's capital is a mix of colonial history and modern enterprise, a city at the middle of the world, and a delight to visitors. Tour the city, then venture out on the PanAmerican Highway, north and south.

10.   Salvador, Brazil

Impressions of this lively city include Candomble, Baina do Acarages, the water, streets, Cairinhas, architecture and lots of beach time.

                                                                    WEATHER

The only thing predictable about South and Central America's weather is its unpredictability. In fact, in some countries (especially those near the Equator), it's not uncommon to experience all four seasons in a single day. In other regions, seasons are dramatically different with hurricanes during part of the year and drought during another. You can check the Weather links for each country for detailed weather information.

In general, Central America has a distinct wet and dry season. Temperatures are relatively similar yearround, but rainfall varies considerably from nearly none at all to 12 inches or more in a single month. The wet season runs from June to October and the dry season from mid November to May. Despite these predictable patterns, it's not unheard of to have a sudden flood in the dry season or to have two weeks of gorgeous weather in the middle of the wet season. Most activities and tours are available yearround, though some of our Belize vacations are unavailable from July to October because of the increased hurricane risk.

The Andean regions including parts of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia also have a distinct wet and dry season, though the months are essentially reversed from Central America. May to November tends to be the driest time of year in these areas and also the coldest. The farther you travel away from the Equator and the higher your elevation, the more dramatic the temperatures changes are. In the highlands, temperatures commonly dip below freezing during the peak of the dry season and climb to 80º F or more during the wet season. You shouldn't feel limited by either the rainfall or temperature changes however. The Andean wet season isn't particularly wet and the dry season sees its share of downpours. In general, shoulder season (spring and fall) often offer the best bet for pleasant weather and smaller crowds, though most areas can be visited yearround.

The Amazon region experiences...you guessed it, rain, heat and more rain and heat! The average daytime temperature is 32-35º C (90-95º F), while nights can cool down to 20º C (68º F). The less wet season in the jungle roughly corresponds to the dry season in the Andes.

Chile and Argentina cover such a large range of latitudes and elevations that overall generalizations are not particularly useful, though specific regions have somewhat predictable weather patterns. Patagonia, the southern region of these two countries, commonly has temperatures below freezing during their winter months, May to September. During the summer, daytime temperatures may climb into the 50s or 60s. Be prepared for incessant winds anytime of year, especially summer. In the shoulder season months - November and March - you are likely to find the winds not as strong as they are during the peak of summer.

Antarctica travel is only available from November to March as ice blocks main access routes during the remainder of the year. Temperatures along the most commonly visited region, the Antarctic Penninsula, range from -5-5º C (20-40º F) during the summer months. Antarctica experiences the strongest winds on the planet, and is the world's driest desert with minimum annual rainfall, especially in the interior.
