Canada

CANADA Oh, it’s big all right. Damn big. And we’re not referring to Canada’s size (a whopping 10 million sq km, making it the world’s second-largest country). What we’re talking about here is the handle on a Canadian beer case – big enough to fit your hands, even with mittens on. If you think that’s impressive, consider Canada’s other mondo attributes. Its terrain is filled with them, from mammoth mountains to hulking glaciers to immense polychromatic skies. Then there are the creatures that roam the terrain and its waterways – grizzly bear, moose, polar bear, humpback whales – each one huger than the next. Canada is impossible to dislike, but go ahead and give it a shot. You don’t like festival-packed cities like Toronto and Montreal that offer the world’s best quality of life? Then take a double dose of history in St John’s, Newfoundland, North America’s oldest city. Not enamoured with the prospect of hiking, skiing or snowboarding over the cloud-poking mountains of Banff & Jasper National Parks? Try a slow ride through the wheat-waving prairies of Saskatchewan. You want a nosh lighter than Alberta beef or Nunavut whale blubber? Pick up ripe peaches and cheeses from the Kelowna’s local farmers’ markets. And it’s a wonder everyone is so nice, given the weather. It’s cold, as in world’s-coldest-country cold (based on average temperatures nationwide), which explains the mitten-sized beer case handles. Snag, a town in the Yukon, recorded North America’s coldest temperature ever: minus 62.8°C. Voltaire may have written off Canada as ‘a few acres of snow’ back in the mid-18th century, but those ‘few acres’ have yielded vast amounts of oil, timber and other natural resources, that in turn have propelled Canada to a very enviable standard of living.

Canada is situated in the northern part of the American continent and covers a vast area. It has a topography that varies a lot. The country became independent in 1867 but kept its ties with the British Crown. It has a lot of national (41) and provincial parks and is rated by the United Nations as one of the best places to live. The nation is developed in parallel with the United States, its neighbour to the south, across a peaceful border. Some of the major Canadian cities are Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and Winnipeg. The majority of them do not stand for capitals of provinces. Greater Toronto and the surrounding areas account for three quarters of Ontario’s population. Part of greater Detroit is also Windsor. One of the cities considered to be the most beautiful is Ottawa, the Canadian capital. Many will be excited by the amazing opportunities that are offered to the tourists. The great selection of activities that suits all ages includes the RCMP march or The Changing of the Guard on Parliament Hill. These sights are considered quite popular. Some top rate museums, such as the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Canadian Aviation Museum, add up to the picture. Summer outdoor activities are also fun due to paths for bikes at the many parks. The Rideau Canal, while frozen during the winter, becomes the longest ever skating rink, which contributes to the winter fun in Ottawa. The country is famous for the Canadian goose, the Maple Syrup, and the beaver. Moreover, this is a multicultural country with free health care which contains the most freshwater in the world. This list seems endless. Canada has temperatures that range in a wide spectrum- from minus 50 to plus 40 degrees centigrade. It is best to visit the country during the fall months of September and October. Autumn is an excellent choice for photographers. Most tourists come during the summer. There are so many places to visit during your holiday in Canada. So, you may feel overwhelmed when making a decision. It is, for example, famous with its ski resorts and regular snow fall. Most of the resorts can provide you with everything you need. British Columbia is the most famous among the skiing resorts. It is like a heaven for the snowboard and the ski enthusiasts. You can visit the Atlantic Provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island) on the east coast and enjoy the Canadian maritime culture. You can travel to the largest Canadian province Quebec, which is predominantly French speaking, and visit Montreal and Quebec’s capital Quebec City. You can go to Ontario and visit its famous capital Toronto, Niagara Falls or the Canadian capital Ottawa. You can visit Calgary, Edmonton and the Banff National Park (Canadian Rockies) in Alberta. If you go to British Columbia, don’t miss the beautiful Vancouver, located on the West coast. Due to its vast distances, it’s very difficult, if not impossible to see all popular Canadian tourist destinations in one visit. Wherever you go, Canada has much to offer and you won’t be disappointed if you decide to make Canada your next vacation destination.

Attractions of Canada

Toronto is a very diverse and vibrant city located on the north shore of Lake Ontario. In the 17th century, indigenous people living in Toronto region started to trade with the French and in the beginning of 18th century they established trading posts in Toronto. In 1793 British colonial officials founded the 'Town of York'. In 1867 when Canada became a country Toronto had 50,000 residents. Today Toronto is the largest Canadian city, and is the most important commercial, financial, industrial, and cultural centre in Canada. Toronto has a lot to offer to the visitor - from spectacular views from the world’s tallest building, the CN Tower to a nice ferry ride to Toronto Islands; from a visit to a fairy tale castle in the middle of the city to the modern architecture of City Hall, BCE Place and TD Centre. Ontario Science Centre with more than 800 interactive exhibits, the Royal Ontario Museum the largest museum in Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario which houses a collection of over 24.000 art pieces are all worth visiting. Harbour front located in the downtown core on Lake Ontario is a huge complex of theatres, galleries, shops, and restaurants. A stroll along the lake is a nice way to relax or if you prefer sunbathing you can do that on the beach. Yes Toronto even has beaches! Toronto is a world class city and one of the best places to live and is the most culturally and linguistically diverse city in the Canada.

Niagara Falls: known as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Niagara River connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and the beautiful Niagara Falls can be seen from both Canada and USA. The Native Peoples named it Niagara which means “Great Thundered of waters”. And indeed it is a great thunder even the volume of the water is reduced more than twice today. The water is diverted to prevent erosion and to produce electricity for Ontario and Eastern USA.

Niagara Falls is a major tourist attraction. The sidewalk along the River and the fall from the Canadian side offers spectacular view of the fall both the American Falls and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls which carries 90% of the flow. (Niagara River is divided by the Goat Island) There is a constant mist coming from the Horseshoe Falls and on a sunny day it rewards the visitors with a sight of a rainbow over the falls. The Horseshoe Falls are 800m wide (2,625 ft) and 57m (188 ft) high.
There are lots of ways to see and experience Niagara Falls. The Rainbow Bridge over Niagara River connects Canada and USA and offer splendid views; Maid-of-the-Mist is another very popular way to get close to the falls. The boat tours date back to 1846 and getting on the boat and hear the thunder of the water is one of the most unforgettable experiences! Climb up the Skylon Tower (it is775 ft high – 236 m) and see the falls from a birds eye and get fabulous photo opportunities and a breathtaking view. Skylon Tower also has a revolving restaurant and this is a perfect place to relax, have a gourmet meal and see Niagara Falls. From the American side of the fall you can go to the outdoor Observation Platform for more exciting views of the fall. Table Rock Scenic Tunnels is a journey behind the Horseshoe Falls – an elevator takes you down and you walk through corridors behind the falls. There are openings where you can see the water falling in front of you. During the years there were daredevils who challenged Niagara Falls. The first known successful daredevil was a sixty three year old school teacher Mrs. Annie Taylor from Bay City, Michigan. In 1901 she got herself into a barrel and plunged into the raging waters. One of the favorite daredevils was a tightrope walker Jean Francois Gravalet, known as Blondin. He crossed the Falls on tightrope in 1848. Blondin did this many times and even carried once a portable stove and cooked an omelet. David Munday is the only person to survive 2 attempts to conquer the falls. He took the first plunge in 1985 and the second one was 8 years later. Niagara Falls is a small town that stretches along the Niagara River. It is the honeymoon capital of the world and is visited by 14 million people every year. The area around the Falls is surrounded by beautiful parkland. Niagara Botanical Gardens and the Niagara Floral Clock are a must see if you get the Niagara parkway and drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Niagara parks Butterfly Conservatory is a home of some 2,000 butterflies and is open year round. Niagara falls also offers other indoor and outdoor attractions like the Comical and Horrifying Museums, rides and fun houses. Niagara Falls Museum is the oldest museum in North America established in 1827 and here you can see some actual daredevil barrels, and the oldest Egyptian mummy. Marineland is one of the most popular attractions close to Niagara falls. Marineland is a theme amusement park with rollercoaster rides, deer, elk and bear population and most important of all – Dolphins, Killer Whales and Beluga Whales aquarium. The acrobatic shows with the sea lions, dolphins and killer whales are not to be missed. Niagara falls has also two casinos - Casino Niagara and Fallsview Casino Resort. Both casinos are worth visiting although the minimums at the table games are high. There is no best time to visit Niagara Falls. The beauty is unique in every season and the sight of that world wonder will be forever in your memories.

Ottawa

Situated in the Ottawa Valley, the Canadian capital Ottawa lies on the banks of the Ottawa River. The city offers a lively and ethnically diverse cityscape, abundance of museums, galleries, and monuments, cultural events, delicious international food, busy nightlife, and a city face looking at the future. The first inhabitants of the area were the Algonquin Aboriginals. Upon arrival in 1759, the British immigrants started settling in the region. By town, the first settlement of 1855, was named after a local Aboriginal tribe. Ottawa was proclaimed capital of Canada by Queen Victoria in 1857. After the Second World War, Jacques Greber was charged to design the recreational spaces of the capital city. The current cityscape boosts many beautiful parks, offering rest amidst the freshness of greenery. Several festivals take place in Ottawa. The Ottawa Fringe Festival offers visual arts exhibits, music, and theatre performances. The Canada Dance Festival celebrates contemporary dance and Canada’s cultural heritage. Furthermore, the capital offers a diverse mixture of architectural and cultural landmarks. In downtown Ottawa, tourists can visit Parliament Hill and see the Commons and Senate in motion. The building is made of carved limestone and sandstone. The library is decorated with wooden material and wrought iron. The landmark hotel Fairmont Château Laurier boosts its central location, superb facilities, and award winning cuisine. The hotel has hosted celebrities, politicians, and heads of state. The National Art Gallery displays Canadian and Aboriginal art pieces and European, American, and Inuit works of art. The gallery features masterpieces by Van Gogh, Chardin, and the Group of Seven, among others. Rideau Canal connects Ottawa to the city of Kingston. This is the oldest canal system on the North American continent. Moreover, the structure is an architectural piece covered by the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bytown Museum showcases items that relate to the history of Ottawa. The Canada Science and Technology Museum explores the world of mechanics, transportation, and technological progress. The Canadian Museum of Civilization is one of the most visited museums in Canada. The museum collects, preserves, and displays items that give a glimpse to the heritage of the country. The exhibitions facilitate human progress in different historic periods and explore various past and modern civilizations.

Montreal

The largest city in the Quebec Province, Montreal carries the name of Mount Royal hill which is situated at the centre of the city. The historic centre of Canada’s French civilization entrances the visitor with its cultural diversity. In the 15th century, the area of Montreal was populated by native tribes which formed the union of the Five Nations. A fur trading post originated on the Island of Montreal in 1611. The opening of the Lachine Canal and the construction of the Victoria Bridge established Montreal as one of the major Canadian cities. One of the biggest public events in city is the Montreal Festival International du Jazz. The 11 day Montreal High Lights Festival takes place during the winter. Its program features artistic, gastronomic, and musical events. In addition, Montreal offers plenty of cultural and historical places of interest. Built in 1693, Place d'Armes is one of the oldest sites in Montreal. The square hosts a monument commemorating Chomedey and his defense of the early settlement against the Iroquois. The current City Hall is a Victorian building designed by H. Perrault. The massive and elaborately decorated hall exemplifies the French Second Empire style. To the north side of Mont Royal is the St Joseph Oratory. The building two churches: the first floor crypt church and the grandiose oratory church. The second building houses the Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal, the boys' best choir in Montreal. The religious complex contains a museum dedicated to the artist Jean Frere Andre, garden, cafeteria, souvenir shop, and pilgrims` hostel. The Bonsecours Market in Old Montreal is a two-level silver-domed building which has served as the major market hall until the 1960s. The building was designed by architect William Footner and completed by George Browne. In 1849, the market area accommodated the parliament of United Canada. At present, the hall hosts shops, restaurants, and a museum displaying items of cultural and historic significance. Vieux-Montreal or Old Montreal is situated in the Ville-Marie borough. The area contains some of the oldest buildings in the city. Vieux-Montreal houses the City Hall, the Bonsecours Market, and buildings of colonial mansions such as the Chateau Ramezay. The cobblestoned narrow streets of the old city are well preserved. Horse carriages remind of the vitality of the historic settlement. The port of Vieux-Montreal is surrounded by museums and various recreational facilities.

Quebec City is the capital of the province of Quebec in Canada and the second largest city in the province after Montreal. Quebec City's Old Town (Vieux-Québec) was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. Quebec City s the oldest city in Canada and its fortification walls still exist today. Visitors can walk along the top of the walls for 4 km (3 miles). Quebec City was founded in 1608 by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain and is situated along the banks of St. Lawrence River. Most of the Quebec City residents speak French. The Lower Town or Basse-Ville is the oldest neighborhood in North America and has truly French charm. Its cobblestoned narrow streets, inviting restaurants and stone 18th century buildings are fascinating. Most of the sights can be explored on foot and are in both Lower and Upper Town. The city’s most photographed landmark is no doubt Château Frontenac (Fairmont Le Château Frontenac). Its steep copper roof and distinctive architecture dominate the Old Quebec City skyline. The hotel was built by the Canada Pacific Railway in 1893 and overlooks the St. Lawrence River. Château Frontenac was designed by Bruce Price, US Architect, and the building resembles French Château with high steep roofs, dormer windows and dozens of towers. The brick and stone Château Frontenac now has 600 rooms to offers to its guests. Other hotels build by Canada Pacific Railway in Canada are Royal York Hotel in Toronto and Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa. Hotel de Ville (City Hall) is another remarkable building in Quebec City. The park around the building is a popular place for artists, street vendors and performers quite like the Place Jacques-Cartier and Hôtel de Ville in Montreal. City Hall in Quebec City was built in 1833.

The Holy Trinity Anglican Church was built in 1804. This was the first Anglican Church outside of Britain and is modeled on St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London. The Holy Trinity Anglican church has a stone Neo-Classical Façade. Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Quebec is a splendid Catholic church which was first built in 1647. The church that we see today is the fifth version of the original Cathedral and has impressive façade, stained glass windows and gilded decorations inside. Assemblee Nationale (Quebec’s provincial parliament) is outside of the Old City walls. It was built in 1886 and has an impressive façade. The central tower has 22 bronze figures representing people who played a crucial role in the development of Quebec as a province. Place Royale is a square surrounded by 18th and 19th century buildings and is a favorite among the street performers and tourists. Quebec City is known for its Summer Festival and Winter Carnival. The Winter Carnival is one of the biggest in the world. It starts around the end of January and it lasts 17 days. It features, ice sculpture events, canoe and dog sleigh races and night parades.
