The playwright Arthur Miller once said that the essence of America was its promise. For newly arrived immigrants and jet-lagged travellers alike, that promise of America can take on near mythic proportions. America is a land of dazzling cities, towering coast redwoods, alpine lakes, rolling vineyards, chiselled peaks, barren deserts and a dramatic coastline of unrivalled beauty. And that’s just California!   In the other 49 lie an astounding collection of natural and cultural wonders, from the wildly multihued tapestry of urban streets to the mountains, plains and forests that cover vast swaths of the continent. America is the birthplace of LA, Las Vegas, Chicago, Miami, Boston and New York City – each a brimming metropolis whose name alone conjures a million different notions of culture, cuisine and entertainment. Look more closely, and the American quilt unfurls in all its surprising variety: the eclectic music scene of Austin, the easygoing charms of antebellum Savannah, the ecoconsciousness of free-spirited Portland, the magnificent waterfront of San Francisco, and the captivating old quarters of New Orleans, still rising up from its waterlogged ashes.

This is a country of road trips and great open skies, where four million miles of highways lead past red-rock deserts, below towering mountain peaks, and across fertile wheat fields that roll off toward the horizon. The sun-bleached hillsides of the Great Plains, the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest and the scenic country lanes of New England are a few fine starting points for the great American road trip. The U.S. is home to some fabulous big-city art museums, but – surprise – there’s also great art viewing in several smaller cities. Here’s where to go for the ultimate art tour:

New York City’s renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s largest art museums, houses an astonishing 2 million pieces. Save energy for the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Treat yourself to a peek at the new “Art of the Americas” wing at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Across the street, lush artworks adorn the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, an Italianate palazzo Art lovers converge on the Santa Fe Indian Market. The city’s 200 galleries are a major attraction, as are the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture and Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. – “America’s art collection” – is always free. Plan to linger awhile in the outdoor sculpture garden. Savour a “Monet Moment” at the Art Institute of Chicago – this 1 million-square-foot museum houses one of the world’s best collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art. You might call Tacoma, Washington, America’s most breakable city – it’s home to the 500-foot-long Chihuly Bridge of Glass, the Museum of Glass and the art glass-adorned Hotel Murano. At the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, view 7,000 years of Western art, enhanced by dramatic architecture and dazzling views enter the temple-like Philadelphia Museum of Art and explore the diverse heritage that shaped American art. Stick around for live music at Art after 5 (Fridays). Tour art galleries in turn-of-the-century Victorian buildings in Hot Springs, Arkansas, then relax in natural thermal waters. Once a sleepy railroad town, Roanoke, Virginia, is home to the ultra-modern Taubman Museum of Art and a burgeoning gallery scene

Places to visit in America

1. Southern Utah

If you’ve never seen the amazing rock formations and colour landscape of Southern Utah’s canyon lands, you’re missing out on one of the most mesmerizing landscapes in the US. Utah is the closest most of us will ever come to setting foot on another planet, as the landscape is unlike anything seen throughout the rest of the US.

Why go now? Southern Utah’s national parks like Zion and Bryce Canyon have miraculously not been overrun with tourists, other than Europeans who seem to be ahead of Americans in discovering one of the exceptionally gorgeous and mind-boggling natural wonders of the world. But that may change with Danny Boyle’s thrilling film 127 Hours adding renewed excitement about the region. Just make sure you don’t go hiking alone!

2. New Orleans

Beloved New Orleans had a hard time attracting tourists in the first few years following Hurricane Katrina. But five years and millions upon millions of dollars later, New Orleans has recovered and its tourism numbers are again approaching pre-Katrina levels. This year is a particularly good year to go: it’s Tennessee Williams’ 100th birthday and also the 25th anniversary of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, which is held in March. It’s also the 5-year anniversary of New Orleans’ unique version of the ‘Running of the Bulls’ – roller derby style. Add in all the great music and culture festivals and restaurants and really, how can you not go to New Orleans this year?

3. New York City

Since 9/11, the site for the World Trade Centre’s twin towers has stood out as a closed-off, out-of-view, painful gaping void. This year that changes, as the former WTC site finally reopens to the public with the National September 11 Memorial. For all of New York, September 11, 2011 will be a defining moment. The city is also experiencing a renaissance: half of the roads in Times Square have been given over to pedestrians, the 85-acre Brooklyn Bridge Park continues to see old piers transformed into parks and apartments, and the universally loved High Line, a reinvention of an elevated train line as a landscaped walkway, opens its second stretch in Chelsea this year. Also, Brooklyn’s Coney Island finishes its much-needed $30 million makeover this summer. And on May 23, another icon will have a historic moment when the New York Public Library turns 100.

4. Austin and West Texas

Our staff picked Texas because it’s the most overrated and underrated state in the country. Overrated, some say, by Texans, and underrated by everyone else. From music to food to natural resources, Texas does nothing small. Take ‘Big Fun in Big Bend’, one of our favourite road trips. Starting in Fort Davis, wind your way up to McDonald Observatory, for their outdoor Star Party, and make sure to stop for some high desert picture taking along the way. Then drive south through the little ghost town of Shafter and Big Bend Ranch State Park and look for a local outfitter to take you on a river journey along the Rio Grande. If you go in early November, check out the Trilingual International Chilli Championship that attracts 5000 spicy food fans each year to the little town of 300. Farther down the road at Big Bend National Park you have over 150 miles of hiking trails to choose from – hit the trail early and try the Hot Springs trail that leads to an outdoor hot spring pool just a stone’s throw from the Mexico border. And while the economy may dip elsewhere, hotels are selling out in Austin TX for the 25th annual SXSW Music and Media Festival in March. With its trisected appeal of musicians, film buffs and interactive whiz kids, this is a huge, one-of-a-kind event.

5. Savannah, Georgia

April 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the US Civil War. Although hostilities started in South Carolina, Savannah was the ultimate goal of General Sherman’s army as they marched to the sea. But when he arrived, he got soft on its beauty and spared it. There’s no denying that Savannah is gorgeous. The trees are covered in Spanish moss, which makes it enchanted. Its compact, historic center tips its hat to its 19th-century roots, and is best seen at a leisurely pace on a bike…but go with a bike buddy: the city is the setting of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and is supposedly filled with ghosts. But like a Southern belle with a split personality, this grand historic town also revolves around unbridled public debauchery.  Savannah loves its sinful pleasures, be they cheese grits, bourbon cocktails, or the bump and grind of partying locals. A rare place of the south where Sherman’s not a four-letter word.

6. Denver, Colorado

Another sesquicentennial – bet you didn’t know it’s the 150th anniversary of Colorado Territory. Maybe you did. The Colorado Gold Rush started in 1861 and brought an influx of settlers into the region. We’re lucky that Colorado is now much easier to get to as it has some of the best skiing in the country with over 26 resorts, including the country’s first ski-in/ski-out ballroom at the Viceroy Snowmass. Even though Boulder often gets all the love, we highly recommend Denver.  This sparkly-clean mile-high city is nestled amid beautiful mountains yet urban delights abound. The Denver Art Museum, designed by Daniel Libeskind, is an architectural feat where you can see modern art as well as historical exhibitions. The shopping area near 16th Street features some fabulous stores including Tattered Cover, one of our favourite independent bookstores in the US. And IM Pei, who designed the Louvre pyramid, also designed several projects in Denver like the Mile High Centre and Courthouse Square. It’s like Paris in the West.

7. Northern California

Northern California is like no other place in the country. Come for the stunning natural scenery, incredible food, biodynamic wineries, micro-brewing companies, wildlife, beaches, and you might find yourself staying a long time. And how about those World Series champion Giants? Their first home game is April 8! We personally recommend: Big Sur, Anderson Valley Brewing Company, Santa Cruz, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Yosemite National Park, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, San Francisco burritos and Oakland’s taco trucks, Eastern Sierra hot springs, Mt Shasta, mushroom hunting in the forests, and visiting local cheese makers. Hey, if you need more suggestions, just ask us!

8. Grand Canyon National Park

A lot of National Parks came up on our shortlist but Grand Canyon National Park won out over the rest. A perennial favourite and a jewel of the National Parks system, Grand Canyon recently opened Phase V of the new Grand Canyon Greenway trail. With its opening there is now a continuous, paved, accessible trail all the way from Grand Canyon Village to the South Kaibab Trailhead. The two rims of the Grand Canyon offer quite different experiences and, as they lie more than 200 miles apart by road, are rarely visited on the same trip. Most visitors choose the South Rim, which boasts easy access, the bulk of services and the panoramic vistas for which the park is famous. The quieter North Rim has its own charms; at 8200ft elevation, its cooler temperatures support wildflower meadows and tall, thick stands of aspen and spruce. For many, the Grand Canyon epitomizes the ultimate American travel destination. If you haven’t been yet, don’t wait another year.

9.  Palm Springs, California

When Northern Californians want to escape our cold and fog for a taste of summertime, we head to Palm Springs. But Palm Springs isn’t just for resort hounds. Nearby Joshua tree will satisfy the hiking and rock climbing desires of any wilder geek. And the Coachella Festival has hosted the likes of Prince, The Cure and Jay-Z. But we especially love Palm Springs’ annual Modernism Week. It has events across the city celebrating all things mid-century: clothes, cars, architecture, music, food. We don’t have the details for next year’s event but it looks like they may cook up a tribute to mid-century fashion this year.

10. Hawaii

Flights to the Hawaiian Islands may seem pricey but when you step back and compare these with tickets to the South Pacific, Hawaii is an affordable tropical paradise. By serendipity and design, Hawaii is an almost flawless destination. It’s an enchanting multicultural society with roots in Polynesia, Asia, North America and Europe, and it’s an expression of nature at its most luscious and divine. Hawaii is hiking sculpted cliffs or diving coral-reef cities in the morning and drinking mai tais to slack-key guitar at sunset. It’s slurping juicy papayas with hibiscus flowers in your hair; its Pacific Rim cuisine, fiery volcanoes and cavorting whales. Hawaii offers something for everyone, even if you hate beaches. And 2011 is the 70th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor.

Day Wise itinerary

Day: 1-2 Los Angeles & Las Vegas

We head out of LA on day one to start our adventure with a sudden burst of neon - Vegas is right in your face - the greatest show on earth. Watch out though, some dub this place 'Lost Wages'! Why not cruise "The Strip" in a super-stretch limo, indulge in an all-you-can eat buffet, take in a show or just watch the amazing crowds and neon signs as the glitzy hotels try to out do each other with spectacular attractions. And if that's not enough, take a helicopter flight back down The Strip or just gamble the night away in one of the world class casinos. Oh, and there's a saying here: what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
Accommodation: 2 en-route hotel nights paid locally

Day: 3-4 Zion National Park & Lake Powell

Journey further east to Zion National Park. Explore the hidden canyons or maybe hike to Angels Landing. Okay, so getting up there can be devilish at times, but the famous trail puts on a full 360-degree display of this magnificent national park. Swim the deep blue waters of Lake Powell, formerly the great Glenn Canyon, or just sit back on the shore and soak up the powerful rays of this beautiful and surreal man-made desert oasis.
Accommodation: Camping included

Day: 5-6 Grand Canyon National Park

No trip west is complete without a stop at the Grand Canyon and we have a full day tomorrow to experience the grandeur of one of the Earth's natural wonders. Pack your best boots and don't forget your camera for a sunrise/sunset hike along the rim. For the more ambitious take the long hike down Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point or choose the "bird's eye" view on a scenic flight. As you watch the sinking sun paint it amber, maroon and red, its breathtaking immensity blow you away.
Accommodation: Camping included

Day: 7 Monument Valley

Venturing further into the desert southwest, we hit iconic Monument Valley, used in countless Hollywood scenes from Westerns to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Get 4x4-bound and flit between towering buttes and massive mesas. This is sacred Navajo land; take home their secrets, legends and the odd handcrafted keepsake. Tonight, experience a stunning sunset overlooking the valley. Accommodation: Camping included

Day: 8 Arizona/Roswell, New Mexico

A little alien spotting in Roswell could be on the cards today, but with the vast desert stretching out before us, we'll go wherever the mood takes us! If you choose Santa Fe for the night, its sure to work its charm on you with its artsy vibe and the best Mexican food in the USA. Accommodation: Camping included

Day: 9-10 Carlsbad Caverns National Park & Texas

Do you know your stalactite from your stalagmite? Carlsbad Caverns boasts over 100 limestone caves sporting glinting minerals and telling names like the Hall of the White Giant and Green Lake Room. The Lone Star then bids you a big-hearted welcome for four nights in the mighty Texas. The biggest state of the continental USA is also home to plenty of Mexican-American cuisine, "Tex-Mex", so spicy fajitas and tacos are on the menu tonight.
Accommodation: Camping included

Day: 11-12 San Antonio

Don your Davy Crockett hat and check out the Alamo, symbol of Texan pride and independence from Mexico. Or stroll the Paseo del Rio. If your Spanish is shaky, that's the cobbled 'river walk', bursting with greenery, cafes and boutiques.
Accommodation: Camping included

Day: 13 West Texas/Louisiana

We say farewell to the biggest state of continental USA, and goodbye to the home of 'Tex-Mex' cuisine and a big hello to Louisiana, the home of gumbo stews and all that jazz.
Accommodation: Camping included

Day: 14-15 New Orleans

We hit Louisiana, look for gators on our optional swamp tour through the mysterious bayous of Cajun country (a must do!). Then on to the home of the Big Easy & Bourbon Street, New Orleans. Now we're talking all that jazz! We head into the enchanting French Quarter of New Orleans and hear the real deal at Preservation Hall, echoing with chirpy trumpets and smooth sax. New Orleans has more than just food, drink and music to offer, so after sampling a Hurricane at Pat O'Brien's, do the Huckleberry Finn thing and chug along the Mississippi River. Accommodation: 2 nights en-route hotel paid locally

Day: 16 Mississippi/Alabama

Next, travel into the 'Deep South' to Mississippi and Alabama for a taste of true southern hospitality. License plates proclaim you're in the 'Heart of Dixie', and the radio pumps out a hatful of country tunes to back this up.
Accommodation: Camping included

Day: 17-18 Tennessee & Virginia

In Tennessee, choose to don a lifejacket, grip a paddle and bounce along a churning stretch of white water on an optional rafting trip - pure adrenalin! You'll need no second invitation to appreciate the grand views of the rolling green slopes of the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia. Accommodation: Camping included

Day: 19-20 Washington D.C

Washington DC, is the social, cultural and political hub of the United States. Explore the best of America's Capitol - from the Smithsonian Museum to the Lincoln Memorial on a guided tour. During the day the city is awash with greenery, so once you're done with sightseeing, go people watching in the parks. Why not take advantage of the great nightlife in Georgetown! Accommodation: Camping included

Day: 21 New York Area

Leaving the capital behind we head north through Pennsylvania to the New York Area and the end of our cross country adventure. This tour is not scheduled to spend any time in New York City so make sure you book extra hotel nights and explore the sights and sounds of the Big Apple on your own. Splurge along Fifth Ave, hit the top of the Empire State Building, or soak up the trendy, laidback vibe of Greenwich Village before heading home. This tour ends at approximately 17:00 hrs. We can book you post-tour accommodation at our gateway hotel if required. If you are planning to fly tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 21:00 hrs.
